Union Congress

The membership of the Finnish Seafarers’ Union FSU elects from amongst the members delegates for the Union Congress, which convenes every fourth year. The Union Congress is the highest decision-making body of the union.

The delegates are elected by the members voting in an election and each local trade union branch forms its own electoral district. For each electoral district, one delegate will be elected per each block of 200 members or part thereof who have the right to vote or are entitled to be elected. In 2016 Union Congress there will be 38 elected delegates.

The Union Congress determines the general policy of the Union for the next four years. During the Congress, decisions are also made about the rules of the Union and about initiatives put forward by local trade union branches or individual members.

The Congress chooses the members of the Executive Committee and the General Council.

General Council

The General Council is the Union’s supreme decision-making authority between Congresses.

The General Council has a chairperson and 20 other actual members. Each actual member has a deputy member.

Each local trade union branch and its members can make proposals to the General Council.

The General Council convenes in a statutory meeting twice a year, in the spring and autumn. The General Council can also be convened at other times if necessary.

Executive Committee

The task of the Executive Committee is to take care of the matters of Finnish Seamen’s Union in accordance with the decisions made by the Congress and the General Council.

The Executive Committee includes the Union Chairperson, the Union Secretary and at least eight and a maximum of thirteen actual members. Each actual member of the Executive Committee has a personal deputy member. The Executive Committee chooses from amongst its members a deputy chairperson.

Each local trade union branch and its members can make proposals to the Executive Committee.

The present Union Chairperson is Mr. Simo Zitting.
