Student

Students in the maritime sector can become members of the Finnish Seamen's Union already during their studying time. A student member of the union is entitled to the same benefits as the other members. In addition, to this, the personnel of the Finnish Seamen's Union will provide guidance and help for student members in different issues connected with working life. Therefore, the Finnish Seamen's Union is your help and support already during job training and when you take up your first working place in this sector.

The Finnish Seamen's Union is the seafarer's old collective bargaining organisation, which also participates in the development of education in maritime sector.

A little gem!

If you are during your study time without income, you are entitled to receive an exemption from payment of the membership fee. To obtain the membership fee exemption you must take a copy of your studying certificate and submit it to the membership register of the Finnish Seamen's Union. The certificate of studying can be obtained from you own college or institute. However, if you work during your studying time, the normal membership fee will be collected and deducted from your taxable income.

From the point of view of social security, it is important that you join the unemployment fund immediately you begin your first employment and that you ensure that your membership fees have been paid from your very first wages/salary. In this way you can ensure that the working conditions, which are a prerequisite for receiving unemployment security, begin to be met. Therefore remember to contact the membership register when you start work.
