Occupational health and safety representative and committee

If an employee encounters in his/her work a problem concerning occupational health and safety then s/he can turn to the vessel’s occupational health and safety representative. The occupational health and safety representative represents the crew on the vessel and s/he is elected for this task. The occupational health and safety representative shall receive appropriate education, organised by the employer to ensure that the representative is able to take care of all the necessary tasks.

An occupational health and safety committee must be established on a vessel in which there are at least 20 people working. (in the near future, when the seamen’s work agreement is ratified, there will be an amendment to the legislation: an occupational health and safety representative and an occupational health and safety committee must be elected if there are at least five employees on a vessel.)
