The magazine of the Finnish Seamen’s Union – ‘Merimies’ – up-to-date news about shipping brought to your home

All of the members of the Union who are in the labour market will receive, delivered to their home, free of charge, the magazine of the Finnish Seamen’s Union Merimies-Sjömannen-lehti. The Merimies-lehti goes to and is present in the working places of members and follows actual the news and events of working life. The ‘Merimies’ is published eight times a year.

Towards the future of the Arctic Regions:

A significant chartering contract for both Fennica and Nordica in Alaska 

 Arctia Offshore Ltd has signed a significant contract for the chartering of its multi-purpose icebreakers Fennica and Nordica outside the Finnish ice-breaking season.

The international oil giant Shell will charter the vessels during the next three years. The contract is for support services concerning oil and gas production on the North coast of Alaska. The operating areas will be the Seas of Chukch and Beaufort.

Fairway keepers are multi-talented experts in waterways and marine infrastructure

Fairway keepers and fairway master hands, who are member of the Finnish Seamen’s Union FSU, maintain and look after Finland’s waterways. The common waterways, which have been marked on the maps, are about 19,500 kilometres in total.

”Young workers can really move things”

The European Union Young Transport Workers got together in Berlin on 27 and 28 June to give views and recommendations for the European Sectoral Social Dialogue (European Commission) about the current situation of young workers in the transport sector.

There is an acute need to create more training and working places for young people. Also the working conditions, working hours (especially overtime) and health and safety at work have to get better. Young people also need more information about the trade unions and of their own rights and collective agreements.

The Finnish Seamen’s Union has now an own Facebook group. You can seek the group with the word: ’Suomen Merimies-Unioni’. Facebook-group will deal with subjects concerning maritime. The group is a so called "closed group", but just press the liity/join button and the moderator will accept your request as soon as possible.
